DESCRIPTION
The Polk Regional Water Cooperative (PRWC) was formed in 2016 by interlocal agreement between Polk County and 15 member municipalities. The purpose of the PRWC is to study, plan, develop and implement alternative water supply (AWS) projects to ensure the Polk County region has sufficient water supplies for now and into the future.
Currently the PRWC is focused on two AWS supply projects. The Southeast Lower Floridan Aquifer Wellfield and Transmission Line Project will provide 16.30 million gallons per day (MGD) of potable water supply to eleven project participants by 2045, with the initial phase projected to provide 7.5 MGD of water supply by early 2028. This project is currently in final design stages, with easement/land acquisition, well construction, and initial construction activities underway. The West Polk Lower Floridan Aquifer Wellfield and Transmission Project will provide 7.88 MGD to six project participants by 2045, with the initial phase projected to provide 2.5 MGD by 2029. This project is scheduled to start final design, land/easement acquisition, and well construction activities later this year.
The PRWC also has two additional projects that have been evaluated through the conceptual and 30% design stages. These are the Peace Creek Integrated Water Supply Project and the Peace River Storage and Water Treatment Facility. These projects are currently on hold pending Southwest Florida Water Management District evaluations of minimum flows and levels, as well as PRWC focus on the lower Floridan Aquifer projects.
The PRWC is developing a comprehensive Conservation Implementation Program for use across the Polk County region to conserve and better utilize traditional sources of potable water.
The PRWC Executive Director, Eric DeHaven, P.G., will provide a brief status report on the PRWC and projects.
