DESCRIPTION
On September 11, 2024, Chief Hezedean A. Smith, DM, submitted his resignation as the Polk County Fire Chief, effective Monday, September 30, 2024. Chief H. Smith has been placed on Administrative Leave by the County Manager preceding the effective date of his resignation. As this position is of critical importance in terms of the demand for service and growth in Polk County, the County Manager desires to perform the search for a new Fire Chief, which could take several months to fill.
Mr. Shawn Smith, Assistant Fire Chief, has both the historical knowledge and rapport with Fire Rescue staff to serve as the Interim Fire Chief, until the position of Fire Chief is filled. Mr. Smith’s salary will be adjusted to align with the outgoing Fire Chief’s salary of $168,096.22 during this time.
RECOMMENDATION
Request Board confirm the appointment of Shawn Smith as the Interim Fire Chief, effective September 13, 2024.
FISCAL IMPACT
No fiscal impact. Funds are budgeted and split equally between the General Fund and the Polk County Fire Rescue Fund.
