DESCRIPTION
Polk County Roads & Drainage recently received a local resident to restrict commercial trucks on Walker Road. In researching the request, staff discovered that some commercial truck drivers are utilizing Walker Road and Bella Vista Street West to travel between State Road 539 (Kathleen Road) and CR 582 (Knights Station Road). Commercial trucks cannot easily navigate these roadways, which are residential in nature. The Roads & Drainage Division proposes to restrict through commercial vehicles along Bella Vista Street West and Walker Road to encourage truck traffic to use State Road 539 (Kathleen Road) and CR 582 (Knights Station Road), rather than travel through a residential area.
FS 316.008 allows local governments to prohibit or regulate the use of certain roadways by any class or kind of traffic found to be incompatible with the normal and safe movement of traffic. Based on staff research, it was determined that postings of “No Thru Trucks” for Bella Vista Street West and Walker Road will benefit the residents in the area, as well as the traveling public, by restricting commercial traffic.
RECOMMENDATION
Request Board adopt the associated Resolution to establish truck restrictions for Bella Vista Street West and Walker Road. Estimated cost for installation of the signs is $1,788.02.
FISCAL IMPACT
Funds are budgeted in the FY 25/26 Transportation Millage Fund.
