SUBJECT

title

Adopt Resolution designating the County’s social media accounts as informational only and authorizing the County’s Director of Communications to disable the public comment feature for these accounts

body

DESCRIPTION

The County operates various social media accounts that, to date and without prior authorization or approval of the Board, the County has designated to be limited public forums. The Board’s sole intent for these accounts is to provide information to residents and visitors regarding, among other things, County operations, essential services, and states of emergencies. Disinformation and misinformation provided in public comments on these County-operated platforms can cause confusion, thereby impeding the Board’s intent for these accounts.

Because the public has alternative means to engage in public business and current law does not require the County to operate social media accounts nor prohibits it from disabling their public comment feature, the Board designates these accounts informational only and directs the County’s Communications Director to disable the public comment feature for each account.

The County Communications Director will amend the Social Media Terms and Conditions on the County’s website to conform with this Resolution.

RECOMMENDATION
