The Parks and Natural Resources Division requested Procurement to solicit bids from qualified contractors interested in the construction of a weir structure, wetland creation, native vegetation installation, and site stabilization to maintain existing flood stages and discharge volume from the property.
Lake Hamilton is an important waterbody within the Peace River Watershed, with flows moving from Lake Hamilton into the Peace Creek Canal and ultimately the Peace River. In 2020, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) identified both Lake Hamilton and Middle Hamilton as impaired for Chlorophyll-a, Total Nitrogen, and Total Phosphorus. Rather than assigning a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), FDEP approved an Alternative Restoration Plan (4E Plan) in 2021, calling for nutrient-reduction and restoration projects throughout the Lake Hamilton Chain of Lakes.
To support this restoration effort, Polk County secured an $850,000 FDEP grant to enhance water quality and restore wetland habitat within the Peace Creek hydrologic basin. The project will capture and divert excess surface water from the Peace Creek Canal onto a County-owned parcel, located on the northwest shore of Lake Hamilton, restoring historic wetland hydrology, expanding wetland areas, and creating treatment wetlands that will naturally reduce nutrient loads entering Lake Hamilton.
Project funding will cover Phase 1 construction for the Lake Hamilton Water Quality Improvement Project. The primary objective is to restore and construct wetlands that provide significant water quality treatment benefits.
Bid 26-080, Peace Creek Canal Stormwater Infrastructure was issued, and two contractors submitted bids. PACC Company was deemed non-responsive.
