DESCRIPTION
Purpose of Layboard: To collect and preserve historical materials relating to the history of Polk County and Florida. The Polk County Historical Commission shall serve as an advisory commission to the Board of County Commissioners and the staff of the museum, library and the Historic Preservation Manager.
The Polk County Historical Commission shall also act as the Historical Resources Advisory Board in furtherance of Polk County's status as a Certified Local Government and the Historic Preservation Ordinance.
Creating Authority: Established by Legislation in 1937 and amended over the years. Further updated and amended by the Florida Legislature in adopting CS/HB 745 in 2011, which was approved by the Governor on June 21, 2011. This act was codified as Chapter 2011-250 of the Laws of Florida.
Duties expanded in 2023-2024 by the passage of Polk County Ordinance No. 2023-076 and Polk County's status as a Certified Local Government meeting the requirements of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as amended, 16 U.S.C. 470.
Appointments: The membership of the Historical Commission consists of nine (9) members who are electors of Polk County, Florida and who are appointed by the BoCC pursuant to the provisions of Section 1 of Chapter 2011-250 of the Laws of Florida. The members of the Historical Resources Advisory Board shall consist of the members of the Historical Commission.
Term: Members shall serve initial staggered terms as set out in Section 2 of Chapter 2011-250. Thereafter, members shall serve staggered terms of 3 years each. Vacancies are filled by the BoCC for the unexpired term in the same manner as the original appointment. Members may be reappointed to serve one additional term.
