DESCRIPTION
The Solid Waste Division has a history of performing applied research that has resulted in cost savings innovations such as the North Central Landfill Constructed Wetland Leachate Treatment System, alternative waste management strategies, recycling sustainability, and customer service. For many of these projects, the University of Florida’s Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure and Environment has provided technical research and engineering reports that have been the foundation for cross-pollination and full-scale projects. As the industry continues to evolve, the need to acquire up-to-date information and approaches to comprehensive waste management systems is vital to better assess trends and forecast societal waste management needs.
This long term “Town and Gown” relationship with the University of Florida has yielded many benefits to Waste & Recycling Division which has had a direct positive impact for citizens of Polk County.
