DESCRIPTION
Poinciana Community Park is a fully developed 28+ acre park located in the east side of the County. The park opened in 2013 and the population growth in the area has created a high demand for use of the athletic fields in the park. Along with a softball complex, basketball courts and dog park, the park also features three soccer/multi-purpose fields. Cricket became a very popular recreational activity in this area and as a result two of the soccer / multi-purpose fields were reconfigured to accommodate soccer and cricket. This was the first cricket field in a County Park.
In 2024, the Board approved a CSA with Dewberry Engineers Inc. to design and permit the conversion of the three multi-purpose fields, inclusive of the cricket pitch, to artificial turf. This year the Board approved the construction contract with Legacy Sports Construction LLC to construct the three multi-purpose fields including the cricket pitch.
During the design phase, the geotechnical engineer performed soil borings and developed the field design based on the conditions identified at that time. Following the start of construction, proof-rolling of the field subgrade identified areas of loose, unstable sandy soils that do not provide the required support for the construction of the artificial turf system.
In coordination with the Engineer of Record and the Contractor, a stabilization method was selected to address the issue. Mechanical stabilization utilizing geogrid, was selected as the preferred approach. This method consists of grading and compacting the existing subgrade, followed by installation of geotextile fabric and geogrid reinforcement under No. 57 stone. The geogrid provides additional structural reinforcement and distributes loads across underlying sandy soils, creating a more stable base.
