DESCRIPTION
This is a County-initiated request to adopt an ordinance enacting a Polk County preservation program. This is needed to achieve Certified Local Government status as defined by the National Historic Preservation Act. Certified Local Governments are municipal and county governments which have made historic preservation a public policy through the passage of a historic preservation ordinance. Participation in the CLG program allows local governments to partner with State and Federal Agencies and other CLGs to share preservation ideas and experiences, as well as the opportunity to compete for CLG grants.
This ordinance is required to be designated as a Certified Local Government that is part of the Certified Local Government Program authorized by the National Register of Historic Places federal legislation but managed in Florida by the Division of Historical Resources in the Florida Department of State. State law requires one Planning Commission hearing, which will be held November 1, 2023.
The CLG is considered a land development regulation; therefore, pursuant to state law, the Board shall hold two public hearings before adopting the ordinance. This is the first of two Board hearings. The second and final hearing is set for December 5, 2023.
