DESCRIPTION

Pursuant to Polk County Ordinance 19-074, on October 7, 2024, the County Manager declared a Local State of Emergency in anticipation of the immediate impact of Hurricane Milton. The Ordinance requires the Declaration and any extensions be placed on the next Board of County Commissioner’s agenda to be approved by resolution of the Board.

On October 7, 2024, Hurricane Milton was forecasted to become a Category 4 Hurricane as it neared the Florida coast with tropical storm force winds extending outward up to 60 miles from the center.  Forecasts predicted hurricane force winds to impact Polk County as early as Wednesday, October 9, 2024.   The Ordinance requires that a Declaration of State of Local Emergency be extended within 7 days, or it expires.  On November 8, 2024, and November 15, 2024 the County Manager executed an extension to SLE 2024-01.
