DESCRIPTION
Polk County’s numerous lakes are a major asset, providing significant recreational opportunities for residents and visitors. As waterway usage increases, conflicts between motorized vessel traffic and vulnerable users like swimmers and bathers present a growing safety concern. The mixing of these incompatible activities creates a risk of serious injury or death.
Pursuant to Chapter 327, Florida Statutes, the Board of County Commissioners has the authority to establish boating-restricted areas to enhance public safety. The purpose of this proposed ordinance is to create clearly marked Vessel Exclusion Zones, which function as Designated Swim Areas, in specific, high-use locations on Lake Winterset, Lake Clinch, and Lake Ariana. This action will physically separate vessel traffic from swimming activities, mitigating risks and protecting the public health, safety, and general welfare of persons using these waterways.
