PRWC Alternative Water Supply Project Options (Information)

body

DESCRIPTION

This agenda item will summarize how PRWC projects have historically been chosen and provides guidance on what water supplies should continue to be pursued.

The PRWC began with a list of 205 possible alternative water supply projects, gathered from regional water supply plans and input from members. Through a technical evaluation process, this list was narrowed down to 9 large-capacity projects that were suitable for regional implementation. These 9 “Nominated” projects were:

                     Winter Haven beneficial reuse expansion

                     NE Polk reuse expansion

West Polk County LFA deep well

                     Winter Haven Peace Creek Cluster

                     Polk Southeast wellfield

                     Regional reclaimed water interconnects

                     LFA groundwater cluster

                     Polk regional Alafia River basin

Peace River/land use transition WTF and reservoir

From these, members ranked the projects, and the top four were selected as “Candidate” projects to be included in the Combined Project Implementation Agreement. These top four were:

West Polk County LFA Deep Well (also known as West Polk Wellfield)

                     Polk Southeast Wellfield

                     Winter Haven Peace Creek Cluster

Peace River/Land Use Transition WTF and Reservoir

Based on cost and permitting feasibility, only two projects moved forward into final design and construction: the Southeast Wellfield and West Polk Wellfield projects.

Although only these two are currently in development, long-term water supply options in Polk County remain limited. It's important to continue evaluating all potential options to ensure the most cost-effective and practical solutions are pursued. For that reason, permitting for the Alafia River Basin project is still necessary.
