DESCRIPTION
Florida Midland Railroad operates a railroad mainline that crosses Murray Road in Frostproof. The crossing is currently unsignalized, with signage consisting of cross bucks and stop signs only. FDOT has designated funds from its 2025/2026 Railroad Signal Safety Program to cover the expense of the installation of flashing lights and gates at this crossing. Upon installation, Polk County would assume 50% of the annual crossing signal maintenance fees, resulting in an expense of $1,967.00 per year for the Murray Road crossing. Executing the Railroad Reimbursement Agreement and adopting the corresponding Resolution would allow Polk County to participate in this program and enhance the perception of safety of the traveling public along this roadway.
RECOMMENDATION
Request Board approve the attached agreement and adopt the associated Resolution to participate in the FDOT 2025/2026 Railroad Crossing Signal Safety Program for Murray Road. Estimated cost of maintenance of the railroad crossing signals is $1,967.00 annually.
FISCAL IMPACT
Funds are budgeted in the FY 25/26 Transportation Millage Fund.
