DESCRIPTION
Lake Marion covers over 3,000 acres in the Kissimmee River watershed, above Lake Hatchineha. Although the lake currently has public boat launching access via a ramp on the south-west side of the lake, parking and maneuverability is limited. Additionally, the current launching facility is located off a 90-degree corner along Jim Edwards Road, making it difficult to safely back into the facility due to passing traffic.
The purchase of the Bellini Preserve on the northeast side of the lake affords the opportunity to construct a larger boat launching facility with ample parking, better maneuverability, and safer year-round access.
Currently, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is accepting grant ap-plications for the Florida Boating Improvement Program (FBIP). The grant provides the opportunity to receive matching funds to support projects designed to serve the needs of boaters and boating related activities. In order to apply for the grant, FWC requires a Resolution, signed by the Board of County Commissioners, to accompany the grant application. The Resolution signifies the legal authority to receive funds provided by the FBIP program and that the governing body has authorized signature authority to apply for and administer the grant on behalf of Polk County. If the Resolution is approved, the intent is to submit an application for funding to assist with the design and permitting of a boat launching facility on Lake Marion Creek with access from the Bellini Preserve.
RECOMMENDATION
Adopt a Resolution to authorize staff to apply and administer a Florida Boating Improvement Grant to fund the design and permitting of a boat ramp facility on Lake Marion.
FISCAL IMPACT
