DESCRIPTION

On January 20, 2024, a sinkhole formed in the front yard of 3657 Royal Crest Drive, Lakeland.  The limits of the sinkhole are partially within county right-of-way and partially on private property.  Roads & Drainage Division staff were directed to take the lead on the sinkhole remediation.  On January 22 the sinkhole dimensions were approximately 40 feet in depth and 12 feet across.  It was noticed that the sinkhole was gradually growing in size.  County staff contacted Madrid Engineering for recommendations and guidance on the sinkhole remediation process.  The first step taken was to fill with sand to stabilize the sinkhole.  The sinkhole required 630 cubic yards of sand to fill.  Once the sinkhole was filled, Madrid performed some underground testing and determined that injection grouting would be required to fully stabilize the sinkhole. Earthtech is currently mobilized to the jobsite and is performing injection grouting via 21 individual injection points.  Following completion of the grouting operation, the County will return and restore the front yard and repair the collapsed driveway.

It is estimated that the sinkhole remediation at 3657 Royal Crest Drive will cost approximately $500,000.
