SUBJECT

title

Approve letter of support to Polk County’s federal delegation members to support the “Fire Grants and Safety Act” (S.870)

body

DESCRIPTION

Polk County is sending a letter of support to our US Senators and Representatives to ensure that the Fire Grants and Safety Act (S.870) is included in the FY2024 appropriations package to prevent these programs from expiring.

The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) and Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) programs are critical to ensuring that Fire and EMS departments have the equipment, staffing, and training needed to ensure the health and safety of their personnel and the citizens they protect.  SAFER and AFG will sunset this year if they are not reauthorized, harming communities across America.

Presented to the Board is a letter of support for the Board Chair to sign on behalf of the Board of County Commissioners asking Polk County’s delegation members (US Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott and US Representatives Scott Franklin, Darren Soto, Laurel Lee, and Daniel Webster) to support and keep these vital programs in the FY 2024 appropriations package.

RECOMMENDATION

Request Board approve the letter of support for the “Fire Grants and Safety Act and authorize the Board Chair to sign on behalf of the Board.
